Jolly Phonics

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.
Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing:
  • Learning the letter sounds
  • Learning letter formation
  • Blending
  • Identifying the sounds in words (segmenting)
  • Tricky words

The teaching sequence I have followed for each sounds is:
  1. Introducing the sound through some flashcards that contain the sound
  2. Action of the letter sound
  3. Rhyme of the sound
  4. Song of the sound
  5. Introduction to writing: using a rhyme and practising the pattern of the letter
  6. Activities: it includes a huge variety of activities like identifying, matching, making pairs, colouring...
